MAGIC Flagship Events

  • MAGIC’s Annual Back-to-School Event: MAGIC hosts an annual Back-to-School event where Bayview children and families come together to celebrate the beginning of the school year and learn more about community organizations in Bayview Hunters Point. To reward their commitment to attend and remain in school, MAGIC provides new backpacks and school supplies to children, ages 5-17. 3,000 people attended MAGIC’s Back-to-School event in August 2006 at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Pool.
  • MAGIC’s Annual Training Conference for Community-Based Organizations : MAGIC sponsors an annual community-based organization workshop, offering training and a shared venue to discuss strategies, ideas, best practices, and common problems and concerns in serving children and youth. The event features informative panelists, discussion and brainstorming sessions, technology training, and plans for increased collaboration between agencies. In October 2006, over 100 youth workers and advocates from Bayview youth agencies attended the conference, held at the Public Defender’s Juvenile Justice Center.
  • MAGIC’s Annual Book & Technology Festival: MAGIC held its second Children’s Book & Technology Fair in April 2006 at the Bayview Opera House. The event, which drew over 400 children and families, featured interactive workshops on how to use and build computers, website design and filmmaking. 1,500 new, culturally competent books were distributed to children, and literacy activities, including reading circles staffed by volunteers, were provided throughout the day. Two dozen authors and poets read and presented their works, and children had an opportunity to meet them.

SBC MAGIC TECHNOLOGY PLAN:

MAGIC’s Technology program provides technological support to youth and family agencies in Bayview Hunters Point. In 2004, MAGIC’s technology plan was funded by SBC with a $20,000 Excelerator grant. Led by MAGIC’s partnership with CompuMentor, Bayview Hunters Point Arts and Technology Center (BAYCATS), OP-NET and KCK (Kids Computer Kamp), MAGIC’s technology plan focuses on three key areas: (1) hiring youth who have graduated from an eight-week intensive website design program to create websites for Bayview youth agencies; (2) teaching Bayview Hunters Point youth how to refurbish computers, and then providing computers to youth and youth agencies in Bayview Hunters Point; (3) providing on-going training to youth who want to continue their computer training. In the first six months of 2005, MAGIC’s technology program will provide twelve new websites to Bayview youth and family agencies, distribute 100 refurbished computers to youth and youth agencies, and provide follow-up training to 100 youth and agency workers.
