More than 2,000 children showed up to Bayview MAGIC's second annual Back-to-School Celebration, where the group gave out thousands of backpacks and school supplies.

Held the weekend before school started at Bayview KC Jones Park, the event was sponsored by several groups, including the San Francisco 49ers Foundation, Providian, Wells Fargo Bank, Monster Cable, SARAI, SF Jumpstart, Frito-Lay, Hansen beverages and the San Francisco Public Defender's Office.

Speakers included well-known hat seller Ruth Dewson and Assemblyman Mark Leno, who stressed the importance of education.

Bayview MAGIC (Mobilization for Adolescent Growth in our Communities) was started last year by the public defender's office to improve the lives of kids living in Bayview-Hunters Point.

"This event is all about the children," said Lydia Vincent, who runs a youth leadership program in the neighborhood. "We wanted to show children the importance of staying and excelling in school -- their lives and future depend on it."
